Once a Month Cooking Made Easy

Once a month cooking is a great way to build your supply of a lot of meals ready to put on your table. It is also a way to save money of groceries. Here's the plan to follow if you are interested in doing once a month cooking.Getting Ready!Get a blank calendar and go through each day of the month and plan what meals you will have each day. Write the name of the meal at the top of each box. Under the name of the meal, list the ingredients needed. When you are done, you have the bulk of your grocery list for the month made. Now go through your calendar and create one master list to take with you to the grocery store.I have found by doing this that I end up saving a lot more money on groceries because I go into the store knowing exactly what I need and I stick to my list. I also have begun clipping coupons, which has saved me a lot of money! (More to come on how to do that in a future post!)Do your shopping for the month in one trip. Now, you still will need to go to the store for milk, eggs, bread, yogurt, ext., however, the bulk of your shopping for the month will be done. After the ShoppingNow plan a day that you will be able to get all of your meals cooked. For example, I did my cooking for the month last weekend. Since I work, I do my cooking on Saturday. I purchased all my chicken I needed for the month. I threw 15 chicken breasts into the crockpot for 10 hours. While they were cooking, I placed 18 breasts into freezer bags and placed those in the freezer. When my chicken in the crockpot was done, I shredded it and used it for three different meals that I prepared.I took 18 more breasts and chopped those into cubes for another recipe. The recipe calls for 6 cubed breasts so I ended up bagging 6 chopped breasts into a freezer bag.All of this takes time, but I'll tell you what. When I came home from work last night, I pulled the cubed breasts out, whipped together the sauce I was going to use and threw it in the oven. That cooked for 20 minutes while my rice was cooking on the stovetop. Dinner was ready in no time and I was able to spend more time with my family and less time in the kitchen.I encourage you to take the time to do once a month cooking and see how much easier your meal time prep becomes!
